Evaluating Storm Shelter Durability in Extreme Environments

​Certification tests may confirm that a storm shelter can withstand 250 mph winds and a 15-pound timber stud at 100 mph. Should a certification test be enough for a safety director to sign a lease or purchase order? The real question is how the materials, joints, anchoring mechanism, and climate systems will perform after six or twelve months of sustained field punishment. The impact testing conducted by the Texas Tech Wind Science and Engineering Research Center confirmed Red Dog's Big Dog units’ reliability. The ASCE 7-22 standard governs minimum design loads for buildings and other structures. It requires commercial buildings in moderate-risk zones to handle gusts around 115 to 130 mph.
